Adrian Segecic is taking his game to a new level with Sydney FC in 2024-25. aleagues.com.au looks at the numbers behind the 20-year-old’s form.
Sydney FC are stacked with talent, both from Australia and abroad. From Douglas Costa, Joe Lolley and Patryk Klimala, to Anthony Caceres, Leo Sena and Anas Ouahim.
But there is a Aussie young gun standing out from the crowd amid his breakout season: Adrian Segecic.

2024-25 is shaping as a breakout season for the 20-year-old – and his numbers are supremely impressive.
Segecic has scored a career-high six goals in 14 games in the Isuzu UTE A-League, with only eight of those starts. Across just 733 minutes of football, he is making a name for himself as a super-sub in the Harbour City.
To put that into context, he is scoring every 122 minutes this season.

The frequency of his goals eclipses Golden Boot leader and teammate Lolley (129.1), in-form Western United star Noah Botic (137.4), Wellington Phoenix great Kosta Barbarouses (176.7), Western Sydney Wanderers forward Nicolas Milanovic (189.5) and Adelaide United’s Luka Jovanovic (124.3), as well as former Macarthur Bulls attacker Jed Drew (146.2), ex-Brisbane Roar sensation Thomas Waddingham (220) and Klimala (194.5).
Segecic is averaging 0.74 goals per 90 minutes. Among players to have played at least 10 games this season, Segecic ranks fifth, only behind teammates Jaiden Kucharski and Tiago Quintal (both 0.94), Adelaide’s Archie Goodwin (0.89) and Neyder Moreno (0.82) of Auckland FC.
TALKING POINTS: Priceless moment sums up Socceroo’s immediate impact
“The style of play we play, he is a very energetic player. He is good in pressing and playing in between lines,” Sydney head coach Ufuk Talay said last month.
“We’re trying to play him in a position where he can use his best attributes and that’s in between lines and playing behind the opposition midfielders.”

Talay was speaking after a 4-1 rout of two-time reigning champions Central Coast Mariners last month – a result inspired by hat-trick hero Segecic.
On that night, the young gun became Sydney FC’s youngest ever hat-trick scorer in the Isuzu UTE A-League after coming off the bench in the 55th minute and scoring three times.
He completed his treble in a 23-minute period, becoming the fifth youngest hat-trick hero in the history of the Isuzu UTE A-League, only adrift of Nestory Irankunda (18y, 49d), Nathan Burns (18y, 259d), Riley McGree (19y, 163d) and Adam Taggart (20y, 175d).
Segecic, who has also scored twice in the AFC Champions League Two this term, is clearly thriving in Talay’s system at Sydney.

“For (the) national team, I’ve always played in the number 10 role, working in between the lines, spinning off strikers,” the youngster told aleagues.com.au previously.
“Look for me, I think that’s what suits me best. Look at the national team, I think I’ve been killing it, and to be able to come here and do the same now, it’s massive for me.”
There is a school of thoughg to suggest Segecic is thriving as a result of his time abroad.
Last season, the versatile youngster was on loan with Dordrecht in the Dutch second division, where he scored five goals. He is soaring to new heights after that European experience.
“Going overseas and getting a lot of games, every three or four days, and building confidence, building experience,” Segecic reflected to aleagues.com.au last month.
“I’ve never felt so confident and free stepping onto the field like I have in the recent games. So, yeah, that’s a massive thing for me.”

Segecic has scored six goals from an Expected Goals (xG) of 3.05. For context, Macarthur’s star captain Germain has scored seven goals this season with a league-high xG of 9.09, while Lolley’s competition-best eight goals have come from a 6.30 xG.
Among players aged 23 or younger in the Isuzu UTE A-League in 2024-25, Segecic is fourth for goal contributions (eight), only behind Drew, Botic and Milanovic, who have played far more minutes.
It’s not just Segecic’s goalscoring that is catching the eye but his ability on the ball; he is in the top 10 for carries (91) and carry directness (40) among attackers aged 23 or younger.

“I’ve thought this kid had something about him for a little while now and the evidence is now starting to mount,” Sydney Morning Herald reporter Vince Rugari said on Total A-Leagues last month.
“Last season, he spent it on loan in the second division in the Netherlands, that he’s come back and just seems more hard.”
Retired Socceroo Tommy Oar added: “He’s got a grit between his teeth as well, like he’s almost got a point to prove every time he’s on the pitch.”
