Top 10 goals for Hyundai A-League 2015/16 season

There were some absolute crackers scored in the Hyundai A-League this season with no shortage of contenders for goal of the season. We’ve narrowed it down to the top 10.

10) Filip Holosko weaving run in Round 11 v Wellington Phoenix

Sydney FC’s marquee man had a solid first season in the Hyundai A-League – scoring 10 goals – but it was his individual effort at the Cake Tin which really stood out. Gathering the ball near the sideline, the Slovakian embarked on a mazy dribble cutting back inside, leaving two Phoenix defenders in his wake. His finish was quality too, moving the ball on to his left foot and curling it past Moss into the far corner.

9) Besart Berisha’s back-heel in Round 26 v Wellington Phoenix

In a game that confirmed Victory’s spot in the finals, the prolific Berisha opened the scoring with a audacious piece of skill inside 10 minutes. After a sloppy giveaway by Tom Doyle, Kosta Barbarouses pounced on the loose ball and fired in a low cross with the Albanian doing the rest. Berisha was unmarked about six yards from goal a pulled off a back-heeled flick which beat keeper Glen Moss at his near post. Bravo Bes!

8) Mitch Oxborrow’s long-range free kick in Round 11 v Wanderers

The Glory youngster produced an absolute jaffa of a free-kick to help his side to a share of the points against the Wanderers in the west. Standing over a free-kick just over 30 yards from goal, Oxborrow wasn’t daunted and tried his luck, curling a powerful left-footed shot past a flat-footed Redmayne into the roof of the net, much to the delight of the vociferous Perth crowd.

7) Mitch Nichols’ curler in Round 9 v Brisbane roar

The Wanderers playmaker produced arguably his best season in the Hyundai A-League and marked it with a cracker to beat his former club Brisbane. Receiving the ball with his back to goal to just to the left of the box, Nichols turned his marker Jack Hingert brilliantly before curling a sensational effort into the far, top-corner to give the Wanderers a late 2-1 win at Pirtek Stadium.

6) Dimitri Petratos’ chest and volley in Round 24 v Melbourne City

The Roar midfielder scored some important goals this season but this one against City stands out. After a corner was headed clear by Alex Wilkinson, the ball came to Petratos just outside the box. He did brilliantly to control the ball on his thigh before trying his luck with a left-foot volley which whizzed past Thomas Sorensen into the roof of the net to open the scoring at AAMI Park.

5) Roly Bonevacia’s long-range howitzer in Round 6 v Adelaide United

The dazzling Dutchman showed his right foot certainly packs a punch with a goal of the highest order to sink the Reds. Receiving the ball just in the opposition’s half, Bonevacia ran forward and when no defenders come to close him down he unleashed a peach of a strike from more than 30 yards out. It scorched into the top corner, past keeper John Hall before he could attempt a save. Unstoppable!

4) Isaias free-kick in Grand Final v the Wanderers

Isaias is forging a reputation as a set-piece specialist and delivered his coup de gras in the epic Hyundai A-League decider. Bruce Kamau won a free-kick on the end of the box with Isaias curling it over the wall and perfectly into the top right side of Andrew Redmayne’s net, with the keeper rooted to the spot. It was a world-class strike and one worthy of the bog occasion.

3) Diego Castro’s volley in Round 26 v Melbourne City

The Johnny Warren medallist had nib Stadium in raptures with the third goal in his side’s 3-2 win over City. Positioning himself perfectly at the top of the box, Castro waited for Andy Keogh’s right-wing cross to arrive before twisting and volleying the ball into the far bottom corner. A simply sublime finish from one very special Spaniard.

2) Bruno Fornaroli bicycle kick in the Elimination Final v Perth Glory

The phenomenal Uruguayan had a catalogue of superb goals this season but none better than has acrobatic effort to sink Glory in the Finals. After the visitors failed to clear a corner, the ball was bouncing around the penalty area before Fornaroli held off his marker, threw himself into the air and launched a bicycle-kick into the top corner of the net. It was pure skill, class and technique from a true goal-scorer!

1) Roy O’Donovan’s volley v Adelaide United in Round 25

It was a tough season for the Mariners but O’Donovan’s cracking volley was a major bright spot. Controlling Josh Rose’s lofted pass on his chest, in one motion the Irishman hit a left-footed volley on the turn which arrowed into the top corner and had “pick that out of the net” written all over it. While it was a mere consolation goal in the 4-2 loss to the Reds, it was a sumptuous strike and took out the Hyundai A-League’s goal of the year at the recent Dolan Warren Awards.
