Sydney FC-s latest signing Matt Thompson wants to prove he is more than just an injury replacement and extend his stay beyond the January expiration on his contract.
The midfielder signed for the Sky Blues minutes before the warm up in Friday-s 2-0 defeat of the Newcastle Jets, and Thompson is confident he-ll be able to assume a role in the Sydney FC squad.
“It was about 10 minutes before the warm up I actually signed the official documents,” he said.
“The contract is literally until mid-January so I have to do as much as I possibly can in that time. I-m grateful for the fact they-ve given me a chance and I-m going to try to take it.
“It-s not an ideal situation knowing you-re finishing up before everyone else, but to be honest the plan is to play a lot more than 12 weeks”.
Aiding Thompson-s cause is the ease in which he has settled into the squad. Having played with Nick Carle and Ali Abbas previously, Thompson has found his role and combinations in the middle of the park easy to adapt to.
“I-ve fitted in straight away. It was an easy transition,” he said.
“I-ve known Nicky for quite a while and played with Ali at Newcastle. I only met Alex [Del Piero] two weeks prior but these are the sort of players that adapt to all situations and I-d like to think I can do the same. It was a good combination.”
With the game against Brisbane Roar this week, Thompson reflected positively on the mindset Sydney FC possesses and what he can expect playing at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.
“The club wants the best out of everyone. They want nothing but success and I-m happy with that.
“Brisbane is Brisbane. They-ve been fantastic for a long time. It-s going to be a good test.”
Meanwhile as a born and bred Sydney boy, Thompson is looking forward to playing in front of The Cove against Western Sydney Wanderers in the Sydney Derby next week.
“It-s going to be massive,” he continued.
“I-ve played in a few Melbourne derbies and they were pretty special but this will be even bigger I think.
“The RBB are a fantastic group but they-ve only been around for a year.
“The Cove has stood there since day one and it-s going to be a fantastic feeling to play in front of mates.”
