Western Sydney Wanderers midfielder Mateo Poljak has questioned the logic of FC Seoul relaying their pitch ahead of the AFC Champions League (ACL) semi-final between the two teams.
The Wanderers had their acclimatisation training session at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s first leg in the South Korean capital and Tony Popovic’s men noticed the pitch was quite lumpy.
While Poljak refused to use the surface as an excuse, he seemed bemused by the way the stadium staff had repaired the pitch.
“It’s a bit unusual, they put different types of grass in different areas of the pitch and it’s a bit hard,” the defensive midfielder said.
“But I guess, it’s the same for them, so we can’t avoid it.”
In the final stages of preparation for the semi-final first leg in Seoul, Poljak continued a familiar refrain from the Western Sydney camp, claiming there is no reason why the Hyundai A-League club can’t get a result on the road.
Western Sydney eliminated reigning ACL and Chinese Super League champions Guangzhou Evergrande in the quarter-finals and J.League title-holders Sanfrecce Hiroshima in the round of 16, and Poljak argued the Wanderers were not interested in stopping their continental adventure now.
“We came here for one reason and that’s to bring home points and to go through to the final,” the Croatian said.
The Wanderers will face Seoul at 8.30pm (AEST) before hosting the K-League club on October 1 at Parramatta Stadium.
