Socceroo a free agent after previously stating intention to return to A-Leagues club

Subway Socceroos forward Awer Mabil is on the lookout for a new home after leaving Swiss outfit Grasshoppers.

Mabil was released this week by Grasshoppers – the most successful club in Switzerland’s top flight who also secured the loan services of A-Leagues graduate Nestory Irankunda from Bayern Munich last week.

The 29-year-old departs having scored one goal in nine appearances this season, though the former Adelaide United star had not featured since October. He scored eight goals across all competitions following his arrival in 2023-24.

“GC Zurich would like to thank Theo (Ndicka), Awer, Asumah (Abubakar) and Dorian (Babunski) for their commitment and wishes them all the best and every success in their future professional and personal endeavours,” a statement read.

It comes four months after Mabil stated his intention to one day return to Adelaide United while speaking during a Socceroos camp last year.

Before moving to Europe in 2015, Mabil made a name for himself at Adelaide in the Isuzu UTE A-League.

After progressing through the youth team, he emerged as one of the most exciting players in the A-Leagues and he helped the Reds win the 2014 Australia Cup.

‘WE SHOULD BE PROUD’: Coach’s powerful A-Leagues message that everyone needs to hear

“I’ve been in Europe for almost 10 years. Time flies,” he told reporters.

“When I first got to Europe, I had ambitions of playing in the Champions League and then play in the top five league in the world. I was lucky enough to accomplish that.

“I needed new goals and one of them was to try to help a club that wants to get back to where they were.

“I would love to come back to the A-League one day but I have some unfinished business in Europe.

“I’m motivated to achieve some more things there and then I’ll come home also to achieve some things hopefully with my lovely club, everyone knows who that is (smiling).”
