Auckland FC land Aussie youth international from UK: ‘A lot of potential’

Auckland FC have signed former Fulham and Bristol City youngster Marlee Francois, the Isuzu UTE A-League leaders announced.

Francois – the younger brother of Tyrese who plays for Wigan Athletic in England – arrives after being released by EFL Championship outfit Bristol City last July.

The 22-year-old former Australia youth international, who was born in New South Wales – has spent much of his career in the youth set-ups of Premier League side Fulham and Bristol City.

After joining Bristol City in 2019 and signing a professional contract two years later, he made two FA Cup appearances for the club, including one against European powerhouse Manchester City.

“Coming to Auckland offers me a new opportunity and a fresh start,” Francois said.

“They’re a club in the ascendancy and currently top of league. I’m here to learn, to play and to further develop my career.

“I’m keen to meet my new teammates and discover what makes this club so special.”

Newcomers Auckland are two points clear atop the Isuzu UTE A-League summit as the Black Knights prepare for Saturday’s trip to Perth Glory.

Having arrived too late for the away game in Perth, Francois is expected to meet up with his teammates when they return to Auckland ahead of the January 18 showdown against Melbourne City.

‘WE SHOULD BE PROUD’: Coach’s powerful A-Leagues message that everyone needs to hear

“He’s young, got a lot of pace, a lot of potential, and likes playing with the ball at his feet. He can also play of either side of the midfield so provides us with options,” said head coach Steve Corica.

“The club have done well to bring him here and sell him the vision of Auckland and what we as a club and city can offer.”
