Hearts were in mouths when Brisbane Roar and CommBank Matildas star Sharn Freier was forced off with an ankle injury in the second half of her side’s clash with Perth Glory on Sunday night.
But early reports suggest the 23-year-old winger has suffered bruising to the ankle, rather than anything more serious, will come as a relief to fans of both the Ninja A-League and the international team.
The injury scare came just days after the winger’s end-of-season move to German giants VfL Wolfsburg was confirmed, when Freier went down in agony after an attempt to cross the ball off the left flank in the 62nd minute of Brisbane’s 3-2 loss to Perth at the Sam Kerr Football Centre.
But on Network 10’s broadcast of the 3-2 thriller, A-Leagues commentator Taryn Heddo supplied an update on Freier’s injury.
“We’ve received word that the ankle of Sharn Freier is just bruised,” Heddo said on commentary.
“So that will be a relief to everyone watching: nothing too serious there is the assessment.”
Freier is set to depart Brisbane Roar at the end of the 2024-25 campaign to join Wolfsburg. Further updates on the Matildas forward’s injury are expected in the coming days, with Brisbane’s next Ninja A-League fixture scheduled for February 2 against Wellington Phoenix at Perry Park.
