Brisbane Roar winger and CommBank Matilda Sharn Freier has signed with German giants VfL Wolfsburg, in a move that will net her Ninja A-League side a club-record women’s transfer fee.
The 23-year-old Matildas star will remain a Brisbane player until the end of the 2024-25 Ninja A-League season before joining the Frauen-Bundesliga side, who are currently third in the German top tier.
The undisclosed transfer figure will be the highest recouped by Brisbane Roar for a women’s player in club history.

Freier has played 57 league games for Brisbane, having debuted for her hometown club in December, 2020.
An anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury suffered in mid-2021 meant Freier missed the entire 2021-22 Ninja A-League season but the rapid winger has since returned to flying form with the Roar; 2023-24 was a breakout campaign for Freier who bagged five assists and two goals in 22 games on the way to being named Brisbane’s Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Fans’ Player of the Year.

Freier’s stellar form at club level led to a senior international call-up, her Matildas debut in April, 2024 and selection in Australia’s Paris 2024 Olympic Games squad.
Freier has scored seven goals and assisted 11 more in 57 games for Brisbane.
With her end-of-season departure to Wolfsburg confirmed, the 23-year-old expressed her excitement at joining one of the top clubs in German football, as well as the sadness of her impending departure from the Roar, where she currently plays alongside twin sister Laini.
“They are a very successful club with class players, so to be given the opportunity to be a part of something like that, I am extremely grateful,” Freier said.
“This move will give me the opportunity to challenge myself and be a part of a full-time professional environment. I’m stoked for the next chapter and am looking forward to getting stuck in and meeting the team.”

“The staff and players I’ve worked with along the way have always been so supportive and the environment within the Women’s program is something I’m definitely going to miss.”
“It’ll be sad to leave but Brisbane will always be home to me, and I’ll continue to support the girls and Laini moving forward.”
