Perth took the lead somewhat against the run of play thanks to a cracking Dino Djulbic volley in the sixth minute, with the rest of the first half saw the Roar maintain plenty of possession with very little joy in the attacking third.
Brisbane seemed to lack the potency they needed to find an equaliser in the second term, but eventually broke through with a direct attacking play that was finished off by Henrique five minutes from time.
What they said
“We were disappointed to concede a late goal there, we felt we probably should have held on for the three points. All around the park we’ve got good players, its a different Perth Glory from the past. I think we’ve got improvement in us and can give it a shake this year.” – Glory midfielder Rostyn Griffiths
“We’ve had a tough week at the club, it’s taken an awful toll on the players. To perform like we did today, I don’t think I can ask too much more from my team.” – Roar Captain Matt Smith
Goals
Djulbic 6’
A more emphatic finish you will not see this season than Djulbic’s effort from a corner. The Doboj-born giant put his foot through a volley, giving Roar keeper Jamie Young no hope of preventing it from cannoning into the back of the net.
Henrique 86’
Mensur Kurtishi made an impact off the bench by driving forward through the middle and playing through Corey Brown for the left-back to tee up Henrique.
The Brazilian still had plenty to do, and he finished the play with plenty of skill, making space for himself before sliding the ball past Danny Vukovic for the late equaliser.
Opta Data Key Stats
Brisbane led the league’s possession stats coming into this game, despite having lost all but one of their matches.
It was the same old story against the Glory, with the Roar dominating possession and completing 624 passes to Perth’s 327.
Brisbane only managed to capitalise on that abundance of possession when Kurtishi came off the bench and gave them a more direct route to goal.
Key Moment
Roar’s new coach, Frans Thijssen, was parachuted into the side following the departure last weekend, needed to shake things up in the second half as his side sought to break down the Perth defence.
Rather than testing out a different striking option, the Dutchman, who perhaps does not have an in-depth knowledge of the side he is in charge of, opted to bring on midfielder Steve Lustica for Dimitri Petratos in a like-for-like replacement in the 59th minute.
Kurtishi proved an excellent focal point when he did come on later, and perhaps could have made even more of a difference if he had been given more time.
The Final Word
Neither side will be overjoyed with this result.
Perth will feel they should have taken all three points after leading for the bulk of the game, but can be content with an away draw.
The Roar, meanwhile, cannot claimed to have turned their season around just yet after what was a fairly dour match that earned them a single point.
