Perth stage epic comeback to salvage a point against Canberra

Perth Glory scored three goals in eight minutes to draw with Canberra United 4-4 in a game of the year contender at McKellar Park on Sunday afternoon.

The home side were looking home and hosed at 4-1 before goals to Alyssa Mautz, Leticia McKenna and a Rachel Corsie own goal stole a point for Perth.

The result is even more remarkable considering Perth had Sarah Carroll sent off with 30 minutes to play for a second yellow card.

No sooner had the referee blown her whistle the action started, Perth mercilessly raiding Canberra’s penalty area.

They soon got what they were looking for but not courtesy of someone in purple, United’s Denise O’Sullivan heading the ball into her own net off a Perth corner five minutes in.

Canberra immediately launched the ball towards the Glory goal and earnt themselves a penalty after Laura Hughes was bundled over by Kim Carroll, Refiloe Jane making no mistake to tie things up.

United then took the lead with half an hour elapsed, the elusive Rhoda Mulaudzi in the right place at the right time as she gathered a Corsie header and slid it past Eliza Campbell.

Not to be outdone Maria Rojas produced a moment of sublime brilliance, the Chilean looping a shot into the far top corner after being left in far too much space.

The home side looked to turn the screws and earned another penalty when Nikki Flannery was felled in the area, Jane notching up a brace from the spot.

Glory seemed destined to go home with their tails between their legs but a crazy final 10 minutes put paid to that.

First Mautz found the bottom left corner on 82 minutes and five minutes later McKenna gave Perth hope with a brilliant strike from outside the box.

Then, with the game heading into injury time the one player Canberra didn’t want on the ball, Sam Kerr, cut her way into the penalty area and delivered a cross that deflected off Corsie and past the despairing Sham Khamis in goal.

A remarkable end to a remarkable game to cap off an entertaining weekend of Westfield W-League action.
