Winless and goalless from their two A-League Men’s starts this campaign, Sydney FC defender Rhyan Grant says the Sky Blues are not about to push the panic button.
Steve Corica’s side were held to a 0-0 draw in their season-opener against Western Sydney before going down to Macarthur FC in a 1-0 defeat in their first home game of the season.
The Bulls sat deep and Sydney were unable to break them down, but Grant says it’s only a matter of time until things click into place.
“Teams have done that to us in the past and we know ways to get around that,” Grant told AAP.
“Obviously on the weekend that didn’t happen. We were just as frustrated as the fans were.
“We’ve got a style of play we know is successful. Yes, we didn’t execute last time out and maybe we will look to tinker with a few things here and there.
“But at the end of the day it’s on us to play our best to make sure we win games. I don’t think it’s panic stations, we’ve got a great team who can execute what we want to do.
“I think come this weekend and going forward we will do that and be successful.
“We know we’ve got the players to score and create goals and we are confident we can start winning games, but it has to start on the weekend.”
The Sky Blues face the Newcastle Jets, who are also winless, at Kogarah Oval on Saturday evening.
After the best part of five months without a game, Corica’s side had to play the Wanderers and Macarthur either side of an FFA Cup win over Sydney Olympic in the space of seven days.
Grant himself had been on Socceroos duty but the defender said his side, who have been without Kosta Barbarouses and Bobo to start the season, will not use their congested fixture list as an excuse.
“It’s funny how the fixture list works but that’s just football. We need to adapt to that and be better. It’s not that big of a deal,” he said.
“I think it was on us for not playing to the best of our ability.
“It does have some sort of impact, but as professional athletes we are not going to use that as an excuse.”
