The good news for Wellington Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert is that midfielder Nicky Ward has arrived back at the club in what he describes as “probably the best shape of my career”.
Ward, who has signed a one-year deal with the Phoenix, left Wellington at the end of last season for Greek club Iraklis Thessaloniki.
At first everything was rosy, but then came rumours of corruption at the club with the president accused of forging transfer documents.
The Greek Football Association relegated Iraklis Thessaloniki from the country-s Super League, though after a court case the club was reinstated.
“Then the Greek FA ruled that court had no jurisdiction and we were relegated to what was basically the fourth division,” Ward said.
“It was quite eventful and while the training was good everything got very messy and I decided the best thing was to get out.
“I am delighted Ricki wanted me back and everything has fallen into place.
“[Girlfriend] Siobhan and I found an apartment in Wellington before we arrived back so we were able to move straight in.
“It is also going to be easy to settle in at the club with me knowing the lads from last season.
“The only downside is that I-ve come from 30 degrees to torrential rain today! I-ve still got my tan though and summer is coming.
“I am really grateful to the Phoenix for the opportunity to come back because the last couple of months have been a nightmare.
“I-m looking forward to the season starting and being a part of it.”
