Brisbane Roar’s playing stocks have taken a huge blow with midfield dynamo Massimo Murdocca suffering a serious leg injury at training on Saturday morning.

Roar medical staff have confirmed Murdocca suffered a fracture in his left fibula after a tackle in training.

The ‘minimal displacement’ is in the lower part of the leg, towards the ankle. However, there are fresh concerns Murdocca could have also damaged the deltoid ligament in his left ankle.

Murdocca will undergo an MRI on Monday to determine if there has been damage to the ankle joint and a decision on possible further surgery will be made when the results are known.

The midfielder is looking at three to four months on the sideline as a result of the injury.

Despite the obvious disappointment of succumbing to injury two weeks out from the clash with European giants Celtic, Murdocca was remaining positive about his recovery.

“It was just one of those tackles that goes wrong,” Murdocca said.

“It was a clean tackle but an awkward fall, how long I’m out all depends on the MRI on Monday.”

“The actual break is the good news, if the ligaments are no good they will have to be surgically repaired.”

“So right now we’re just hoping the ligaments are okay and I can go straight into plaster.”

Murdocca will be missing from the Celtic clash at Suncorp Stadium on July 12 and the start of the Hyundai A-League campaign against Gold Coast United at the same venue on August 8.
