Brisbane’s Player of the Year signs multi-year extension: ‘It’s a huge honour’

Brisbane Roar goalkeeper Macklin Freke has signed a two-year contract extension at his boyhood club, completing a dream 48 hours after sweeping the accolades at the team’s end-of-season awards night.

Freke was named Player of the Season, Fans’ Player of the Year and Outstanding A-League Men Player of the Year at Brisbane’s end-of-season event on Monday; now he’s put pen to paper on a fresh contract which will keep the 25-year-old at the club until the end of the 2025-25 Isuzu UTE A-League season.

“It’s a huge honour and privilege to have extended my time here at the club,” Freke said.

“There’s so many people I owe thanks to who have each played a significant part along the way and helped me build a platform that allowed me to perform at a level and earn this contract.

“It wouldn’t have been possible without the guidance of my coaches throughout the youth team to first team and the unwavering support provided by family and friends. A big shoutout to the fans who have made me feel so loved during my time here,” he added.

“I look forward to continuing to build on this season with this team and this coach and achieving success in the coming years. I have no doubts that this club will continue to improve and move forward.”

Freke has made 44 appearances for the club to date, keeping eight clean sheets. Freke and the Roar end the 2023-24 season at home against Adelaide United on Friday, April 26.
