‘I want to win silverware with this club’: Goodwin sets challenge for the Reds on record night

Craig Goodwin became Adelaide United’s all-time record goalscorer in the Isuzu UTE A-League on Friday night – but it was the goal that followed which meant more to the Reds winger as it sealed three unlikely points against Sydney FC.

Goodwin broke the record with his 36th Adelaide strike in the first half – a goal which levelled the scores at 1-1, before finding goal number 37 deep into second-half stoppage time to snatch all three points from the Sky Blues.

Breaking the club record was a proud moment for Goodwin, but reflecting on his magnificent brace in his side’s come-from-behind 3-2 win decided in the fifth minute of stoppage time by his second strike of the night, Goodwin was quick to point out it was the points – not the record – which he was most pleased with as it kept his side in the hunt for silverware.

“I’m really honoured to overtake Bruce (Djite),” Goodwin said, after scoring his 36th and 37th goals in Red.

“I wouldn’t be able to have reached that mark without the teammates I’ve had over the years.

“At the end of the day it’s a nice record – but I want to win silverware with this club.

“It’s a difficult ask with other teams in contention as well, but that’s my main goal. If my goals can help us towards silverware and towards the finals then that’s the most important thing.”

88′: Matildas cruising to victory (3-1)

A first half alive with chances has failed to produce the same goal-mouth action, with the Matildas easing to a comfortable victory.

HALF-TIME: AUSTRALIA 3-1 NEW ZEALAND

A late Wilkinson goal gives the Football Ferns a glimmer of hope heading into the second half, after Kerr’s brace and Raso’s goal sent Australia cruising.

45+3′: GOAL! Wilkinson pegs one back for New Zealand (3-1)

That was better from the Football Ferns!

Wilkinson broke free into the box for her second genuine chance of the first half; her initial strike was blocked but as two Matildas defenders and goalkeeper Lydia Williams scrambled to clear the ball, Wilkinson poked the ball home to make it 3-1.

33′: GOAL! Kerr again as Aussies run rampant (3-0)

It’s 3-0 just beyond the half-hour mark as Kerr strikes again! This time the Chelsea FC spearhead broke the New Zealand defensive line to latch on to a ball and poke it past the outrushing Erin Nayler into the bottom-right corner.

17′: GOAL! Raso doubles the advantage (2-0)

“The Matildas are on fire!” Exclaimed Network 10 commentator Teo Pellizzeri as Hayley Raso swooped in on a loose touch from New Zealand to bury a long-range shot into the bottom-left corner.

15′: GOAL! Kerr breaks through (0-0)

Who else but Sam Kerr to put Australia ahead? The first Matildas goal of the night comes much earlier in the piece than it did against New Zealand on Friday night, with the latest in a series of corner deliveries finally providing the goal.

4′: CHANCE! Wilkinson fires wide (0-0)

Hannah Wilkinson has gone closest to opening the scoring early doors with a right-footed strike on the break which fizzed just wide of the mark.

1′: KICK-OFF (0-0)

90+5′: GOAL! Goodwin with the heartbreaker (2-3)

Goodwin has popped up at the back post to score his second of the night and snatch all three points for the Reds in Kogarah.

Twice behind on the night, Goodwin capped off his record-breaking night in style as the Reds move above the Sky Blues on the table once again.

90′: GOAL! Blackwood heads home to level the scores once more (2-2)

That’s impact off the bench from George Blackwood, who heads home Goodwin’s free-kick delivery off the right flank to make it 2-2 at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium.

62′: GOAL! Buhagiar restores Sydney’s lead (2-1)

“How did he score from there?” Asked Paramount+ commentator Simon Hill as Trent Buhagiar got in behind Adelaide’s defence to find the back of the net from an acute angle, falling to the deck under pressure to somehow pierce the guard of Joe Gauci in goal for Adelaide.

HALF-TIME: SKY BLUES 1-1 ADELAIDE

Grant and Goodwin exchanged blows in the first half as the two teams go into the sheds locked at 1-1.

36′: GOAL! Goodwin the record breaker as Reds draw level (1-1)

Craig Goodwin has scored his 36th Isuzu UTE A-League goal as a Red – breaking clear from Bruce Djite as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer as Adelaide draw level at 1-1 with the Sky Blues.

23′: CHANCE! Ibusuki over the bar (1-0)

That’s the type of ball Hiroshi Ibusuki feeds off. Curled toward the back post off the left wing by Craig Goodwin, the towering Japanese striker rose above his marker to head the ball toward goal, brushing the roof of the net as his attempt fizzed over the bar.

6′: GOAL! Grant opens the scoring (1-0)

Rhyan Grant has put the home side on top early, scoring his first Isuzu UTE A-League goal since March, 2021 by getting in behind Reds marker Josh Cavallo to meet a cross from Anthony Caceres at the back post to finish on the volley.

1′: KICK-OFF (0-0)

The Sky Blues get the ball rolling in Kogarah.

74′: CHANCE! D’Agostino heads wide (0-0)

Marco Rojas found D’Agostino leaping in the middle of the box to meet his floated delivery, and the resulting header flashes wide of the left-hand goalpost.

66′: CHANCES! D’Agostino goes close for the hosts (0-0)

A Jason Davidson cross into the six-yard box wasn’t cleared effectively by the Roar; the ball fell to Nick D’Agostino in the box whose strike back on goal was gathered by Brisbane keeper Jordan Holmes.

HALF-TIME: VICTORY 0-0 ROAR

Plenty of chances but no goals for either side throughout a goalless first half.

45′: CHANCE! Neville volley threatens to break deadlock (0-0)

Brisbane are finishing the first half with a flurry.

Jez Lofthouse saw his close-range attempt blocked by a Victory defender from close range before Scott Neville’s attempt off the left side of the 18-yard-box fizzed past the right-hand goalpost.

A series of quick-fire strikes from Ben Folami, Marco Rojas and Rai Marchan turned up the pressure on Brisbane’s defence as the hosts look to gain an early advantage.
