Sydney FC coach John Kosmina believes his side’s 5-2 victory over a Perth Glory outfit forced to play with 10 men for much of Sunday’s Hyundai A-League encounter should have been even more emphatic.
While grateful for the three competition points against Dave Mitchell’s men, a relaxed Kosmina expressed disappointment in his side’s inability to go on with the job at the post-match press conference, after they led 4-1 at the interval.
“We should have killed them off,” Kosmina said.
“We were given three points and a lot of goals on a plate and we ended up not finishing the meal.”
“We started doing silly things, running with the ball when we didn’t need to, it’s almost like a cancer it starts to spread – one (player) does it and then the next one does it.”
Kosmina, however, conceded there was plenty to smile about after the Sky Blues posted their second consecutive A-League victory.
“The chances we made, we had lots of opportunities,” he said when asked about the most pleasing aspects of the win.
“And the way that we moved the ball around when they did have 11 men against us (was also pleasing), some of the interchange of passing was great and it will get better.”
“When we start doing it for 90 minutes it will be real good.”
Despite the defeat – their second of the season – coach Mitchell could not find fault with his side’s efforts under difficult circumstances.
“I was very happy with the way the boys played the second half, (it was) a gutsy performance and I think we played quite well and created a couple of chances as well,” Mitchell said.
“People can see that we’re not a bad side so if we can eradicate some little silly mistakes like the first goal we gave Sydney – which was unbelievably ridiculously silly – you don’t give (Sydney) 1-0 head starts.”
“But then we got back into the game with some quality play and I think we were going to give as good as we got.”
“I think we’ve got a side capable of making the top four and if people want to keep writing us off that’s fine, they can do that.”
