Newcastle Jets and Brisbane Roar played out a scoreless draw at Hunter Stadium despite both sides pushing tirelessly to break the deadlock.
Both sides entered the match aware of what they needed to do to finish fourth and claim a spot in the semi-finals.
Newcastle needed to win by two or more, while for the Roar a win, draw or one-goal loss would get them over the line.
The Roar thought they had bagged first-half goals through Amy Chapman in the 25th minute, and Gabrielle Marzano in the 28th, however both were ruled offside.
Just after the half-hour mark the Jets had two great chances to open the scoring, however Roar keeper Hayley Kopmeyer produced a fine save to deny a Jenna Kingsley header, then Georgia Yeoman-Dale shot wide with a one-on-one opportunity.
The sides went into the half-time break locked at 0-0 after a brilliant 45 minutes from both teams’ defences.
The match came to life in the second half in an end-to-end affair. The Jets adjusted to three at the back in an attempt to get the two goals they needed which created space for the Roar attackers.
Despite an abundance of chances neither side could find a winner and the match finished scoreless.
The result means that the Roar finish fourth and will meet leaders Melbourne City in their semi-final on Monday 25 January, while the Jets season has come to an end.
