JETS, SYDNEY IN THRILLING DRAW
Newcastle Jets fought back from two goals down to secure a thrilling 2-2 draw with Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium on Wednesday night.
Quick-fire goals midway through the first half to Kylie Ledbrook and Princess Ibini put the Sky Blues in control, with Westfield Matildas star Caitlin Foord prominent in both.
Newcastle pulled a goal back through Emily van Egmond before the break and grabbed a dramatic equaliser in the final minute of normal time through substitute Gema Simon.
ROAR SURVIVE VICTORY SCARE
A stunning goal from Melbourne Victory’s Melina Ayres wasn’t enough as league-leaders Brisbane Roar came back to win 2-1 on Friday with US star Celeste Boureille scoring a classy winner.
Victory keeper Casey Dumont starred for the visitors in what was an entertaining, feisty clash at Suncorp as part of a double-header with the Hyundai A-League.
Ayres gave Victory the lead midway through the first half before Roar skipper Clare Polkinghorne headed home a corner 10 minutes into the second half.
The Roar continued to push and grabbed the winner in the 81st minute with Boureille heading home a clinical header.
CITY TOO STRONG FOR GLORY
Melbourne City won Sunday’s Westfield W-League blockbuster with an emphatic 3-0 win over Perth Glory at City Football Academy on Sunday.
With both sides on 13 points (City in fifth, Glory in fourth) there were huge implications for the top four going into this clash.
And Patrick Kisnorbo’s side laid the platform for the win with a sizzling first half which saw City 3-0 up at the break.
Ashley Hatch (25mins), Tyla Jay Vlajnic (35mins) and Japan star Yukari Kinga after 43 mins all but sealed the result for City before half time.
RAMPANT CANBERRA THUMP REDS
A hat-trick from Norwegian Elise Thorsnes has breathed life into Canberra United’s top four hopes following a crushing 6-1 win over Adelaide United on Sunday.
On a hot day that saw drinks breaks, a frenetic beginning saw Westfield Matilda Ellie Carpenter – the December nomination for the NAB Young Footballer of the Year – open the scoring for Canberra inside the opening five minutes.
The Lady Reds equalised through the excellent Alyssa Mautz. But after that, it was a ruthless Green Machine that took control of the contest in hot conditions at McKellar Park in the capital.
Thorsnes netted a 15-minute hat-trick either side of half time with Ash Sykes and Karly Roestbakken getting in on the scoring act as Canberra cruised to a big win.
