How life away from football keeps Delbridge focused

Life through the lens of a footballer can be intense so Harrison Delbridge has revealed a snapshot of how he balances his time on and off the field.

And when the Melbourne City ace is not running out in front of bright lights and TV broadcasts of the Hyundai A-League, Delbridge likes to get behind the camera and refocus his mind by taking photographs.

And it’s not all about social media selfies for the 27-year-old. One of the locations where Delbridge likes to let his artistic side shine is among the bright colours and fast-moving action of Melbourne’s skate parks.

The Sydney-born defender grew up in the United States, attending college at Appalachian State University in North Carolina, but has since has taken to life in Victoria after returning down under in 2018.

“I’ve been doing quite a bit of photography lately, that’s been really fun for me to get into,” Delbridge said.

“I think it’s important to have things outside of football,” he added. “We spend so much time – every second of every day – thinking about football, thinking about the next game, the next training session.”

While flexing his creative needs away from the field, Delbridge is well aware of the importance of turning on his physical side when he steps over the white line.

But a major bonus of the arrival of French tactician Erick Mombaerts at City is the freedom Delbridge has been allowed to flex the technical side of his playing style.

“The physical side of my game is a big part of my game and, being a centre-back, I think it’s important,” Delbridge added.

“But also I try to be as clean technically as I can with my passing with the ball.

“When people see you as a big guy – tackling hard and winning headers – it’s easy to put you into that box.

“This year has been really enjoyable for me because we’re playing a style where we’re on the ball more.

“I get to show a bit more of a technically side, which I’ve always been proud of.”
