Heyman sleeps rough for youth homelessness

Westfield Matildas striker Michelle Heyman has taken part in The Chappell Foundation’s Sports Stars Sleepout at the SCG to raise money for youth homelessness.

The 30-year-old slept on the hallowed turf of the Sydney Cricket Ground alongside a host of professional athletes, including Sydney FC star Rhyan Grant, last Sunday.

For Heyman – who has only ever been camping once – surviving the chilly August night with just a cardboard box, pillow and sleeping bag was straight out of the comfort zone.

Unfortunately, it is the reality for over 44,000 young Australians currently homeless across the country.

Heyman said the harsh truth was rammed home as the night took over.

“I think we just need to give back – it’s really sad knowing how many Australians are homeless, especially the youth,” she told the official Westfield W-League website.

“I look at myself being a kid as well and I couldn’t imagine spending a night out on the streets.

“I spoke to my mates about it and none of them had any idea about the figures and that kind of scared me.

“So for me to be able to do this and show support and spread the word, hopefully more people can jump on board.”

Homelessness in Australia has increased by 14 per cent between the 2011 and 2016 censuses.

The Chappell Foundation was established 15 months ago by Australian cricketing icon Greg Chappell, who saw young people sleeping in the Fitzroy Gardens on his morning walks.
