Goal avalanche in A-League friendlies

Perhaps inspired by the midweek Westfield FFA Cup, goals rained in last night as the Jets, Roar and Wanderers all won – with two Hyundai A-League strikers bagging four goals each.

Jeronimo Neumann made a superb debut for Newcastle Jets while Roar and Western Sydney also tasted success on Tuesday night.

The Argentine became an instant fan-favourite with an exciting all-round display in the 8-1 demolition of the Weston Bears at Rockwell Automation Park.

Despite going behind to an early Connor Evans goal, the Jets eventually found their groove – and their eye for goal.

Joel Griffiths and Kew Jaliens both struck before the break before it became the ‘Jeronimo-show’ in the second half.

The former Adelaide United man scored four times in a sublime 23-minute period, showing just why Jets coach Phil Stubbins was desperate to bring him to Hunter Stadium.

An own goal be Weston defender Shane Farmer and a stoppage time striker from Nick Ward completed the rout.

The Jets weren’t the only Hyundai A-League side among the goals on Wednesday night with champions Brisbane Roar FC also winning 8-1.

Grand final hero Henrique was the star, netting four times and the defending champions dismantled local side Moreton Bay United.

Thomas Broich warmed up for the Foxtel All Stars clash with a brace, while Dimitri Petratos and an own goal completed the scoring.

It was a lot tighter at Deakin Stadium as the Wanderers continued their build-up to the ACL quarter-final with a tough 1-0 win over Canberra United.

It was youngster Jaushua Sotirio’s first-half goal that settled the contest, the winger unleashing a powerful finish low, across the keeper into the bottom corner.

Wanderers boss Tony Popovic used the clash to have a look at trialists Steve Kuzmanovski and former Adelaide United attacker Jake Barker-Daish.
