Sydney FC will tackle their Liberty A-League title defence without Mackenzie Hawkesby after the playmaker secured a move to English club Brighton and Hove Albion.
Hawkesby, 23, received a Matildas call-up last year but is yet to make her debut for the national side.
Moving to the Women’s Super League (WSL) is likely to help the highly rated attacking midfielder’s case.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for me and a dream come true to be heading to one of the world’s top leagues,” Hawkesby said.
“I couldn’t have achieved this without the success and ability to develop at Sydney FC.
“I’ve had incredible faith put in me and support shown from (coach) Ante (Juric) and the club, and had the chance to play with an unbelievable squad of teammates and friends.”
Hawkesby will join Matildas goalkeeper Lydia Williams and former Sydney teammate Madison Haley at the Seagulls.
“She’s an eager player with a lot of hunger when she’s on the ball and we’re delighted to welcome her to Albion,” Brighton head coach Melissa Phillips said.
Hawkesby departs Sydney after playing a pivotal role in a championship and three premierships.
“Mackenzie is a superb player with a huge desire to succeed and she fully deserves this opportunity,” coach Juric said.
“It’s always pleasing when you’ve worked with a player from a young age and you see them develop from a raw talent into an extremely good player.
“I have no doubt Mackenzie will be a success in England, she has the personality, the desire and the talent to achieve great things.”
