In an emotional post on social media, Fornaroli conceded it wasn’t the way he wanted his time at the club to end and thanked the fans for their love and support.
He admitted it had been tough being unable to speak publicly about his situation in recent months and hopes City fans remember him for the many goals and highlights he provided.
“Even though the end is not what I wanted it to be, I can’t express properly how thankful I am for the love you have given me in these three-and-a-half years in Melbourne,” he wrote.
“It was for them, the fans and the club, that I tried very hard to keep the unpleasant last few months away from the public eye.

“The most important thing for me was the team and although I was unfortunately unable to help on the field, I tried to not become an obstacle off it. I hope I’ve achieved that.
“I am sorry for every missed goal, for every defeat and every broken dream, but I say goodbye knowing that in my heart that I’ve given everything I had to give.”
Fornaroli leaves City as one of their most decorated players, having scored 57 goals in all competitions for the club over the last three-and-a-half years.
He finished with the Hyundai A-League Golden Boot in his first season after scoring 25 goals, while he also led the club to their first piece of silverware in 2016 when they won the FFA Cup.
