Brisbane Roar have confirmed Ninja A-League Head Coach Alex Smith has departed the club after accepting an overseas coaching opportunity.
Smith leaves Brisbane after guiding the Roar to the Semi-Finals during the 2025-26 Ninja A-League campaign, ending the club’s five-year wait for finals football.
The 2025-26 season also saw Smith become the longest-serving head coach in Brisbane Roar’s Ninja A-League history, having joined the club in 2023.
During his tenure, the club said a number of young Queensland players progressed through the program, including Daisy Brown, Grace Kuilamu, Zara Kruger and Isabela Hoyos.

Reflecting on his departure, Smith thanked the club, players, staff and supporters.
“It’s been a lot of hard work, but I am so grateful to the club, and to all the players and staff I’ve worked with along the way who have been part of the journey.
“We’ve achieved some great steps as a program, developing new youth national team players and Matildas, setting record transfer fees, and maintaining a clear focus on developing and playing Queensland talent.
“Last season was one to remember, and our results were a reflection of all the progress the program has made.”
“Finally, to our members and supporters, who have been the best in the league every year I’ve been here, celebrating every goal together, I am very thankful for all the support we have received.

He concluded: “The sold-out crowds and big wins are truly some of my best memories in football. I leave with lifelong friends and look forward to watching the continued progress of the program.”
Brisbane Roar Chief Operating Officer Zac Anderson thanked Smith for his contribution to the club.
“Alex leaves the Women’s program in a far stronger position than he found it. He’s brought genuine belief and a clear identity to the group, and the way he’s developed young Queensland talent into national team and Matildas players speaks for itself.
“We’re sorry to see him go, but this is a well-earned opportunity and we couldn’t be happier for him.
“On behalf of everyone at the football club, we thank Alex and wish him every success overseas.”
Brisbane Roar also confirmed the search for Smith’s replacement is underway, with the club hoping to appoint a new Ninja A-League head coach in the near future.
