Former Roar defender opens up on Victory move

A fresh start and an opportunity to challenge for a Hyundai A-League title was the reason behind James Donachie’s decision to join Melbourne Victory, the defender has revealed.

Donachie joined his new teammates for pre-season training last week after spending five seasons with Brisbane Roar.

“The main reason I made the move was for a challenge,” he told World of Football.

“I want to win some trophies this year and I thought it was the best move for me at this time in my career.

“I had a great time (at Brisbane). I think I was at a point where I just had to challenge myself in new surroundings.”

Donachie’s first test is to fight for his spot in the heart of the Victory defence, with mainstay Nick Ansell and Spanish import Alan Baro among those pressing their claims.

Baro arrived in Australia this week with a strong pedigree as an aggressive central defender, though he can also be used in midfield.

“I don’t know what ‘Musky’ (head coach Kevin Muscat) is going to do come game one, but it does give him that option as well,” Donachie said.

“A bit of healthy competition is always good to get you playing at your best. It’ll be good to see what happens.”

Donachie hopes consistent form will put him in the selection frame for Ange Postecoglou’s Socceroos squad, having previously represented Australia at under-20 and under-23 level.

“Personally, it’s more so that I get a full season and be consistent,” he said. “Last year we were away quite a bit with the qualification for the Olympics.

“I think with consistent games and games that I perform in, it gives him a chance to have a look and then say he’s ready or he’s not ready.

“Hopefully I’m in and around that frame, but with some good games – maybe 10 or so in a row – I’ll look to hopefully get my foot in the door there sometime.”

Donachie is expected to be part of Victory’s squad for its matches against Juventus and Atletico Madrid later this month.
