Melbourne City midfielder Jess Fishlock says the chance to create Westfield W-League history will act as extra motivation in Sunday’s Grand Final against Sydney FC.
City have the chance to win a third straight Westfield W-League title after beating Premiers Brisbane Roar 2-0 in the semi-final on Sunday.
No team in Westfield W-League history has ever won three consecutive championships, giving this City playing group the chance to go into the record books.
“Any team wants to win the Championship. The chance to win three in a row will give us an extra bit of motivation,” Fishlock said.
“It would go down in history and would be very hard to beat.
“But we have to view it as another game of football. If we view it as anything else then the game will go out the window. We have to treat it like any other game.”
Fishlock was a huge factor in City’s upset win over Roar, scoring the match-sealing second goal with 18 minutes left.
It was a classy finish from the international star, lobbing the ball over the advancing Roar goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold from the edge of the box.
City have advanced to the decider despite finishing fourth after the regular season for the second straight season.
“Whether you finish fourth or first it doesn’t matter for us. Our consistency has let us down at times this season but we truly believe in our quality,” Fishlock said.
“We have one of the best back-fours and goalkeepers in the world – if not the best goalkeeper (Lydia Williams).
“We know what Sydney are about and we know their players, but we truly believe in our group and our quality.
“We’ll go into next week full of confidence and I have no doubt Patrick [Kisnorbo] will give us every bit of information and preparation that we need to win.”
