Fit-again Sydney FC defender Brett Emerton says he still harbours ambitions of playing for the Qantas Socceroos again.
The 33-year-old last played for Australia nearly a year ago, before suffering a set-back from an ankle injury.
Emerton admitted that pulling on the green and gold has been his motivation since recovering from surgery six months ago.
“I feel I’m back,’ Emerton said.
“I’ve got three games under my belt and I’m feeling stronger with each one.
“I hope to have the opportunity to play for the Qantas Socceroos again.”
“It’s always an honour and a privilege to represent your country,” he added.
Australia play a friendly against South Korea on November 14 but their next proper hit-out – in a World Cup Qualifying match against Oman on March 27 – is still five months away, giving Emerton time with his club to try and earn a recall.
The 33-year-old was Sydney’s major drawcard last season, but is happy to pass that mantle on to Alessandro Del Piero.
“It’s taken a little bit of pressure off myself,” Emerton admitted.
“I’ve enjoyed more the fact we’ve got Del Piero in our squad.”
“He’s come in, he’s settled well, and for a footballing superstar, he’s a down to earth bloke and he’s fitted in really well.
“So myself and all the boys are just happy for him to be here.”
The Sky Blues will play at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium for the first time this weekend when they host Perth.
And Emerton is hoping the quality of his team will attract more fans to the stadium.
“If entertainment is anything to go by I think most of the fans will be coming back,” Emerton said.
“Hopefully we’ll put on another entertaining performance.”
