Western United have handed 20-year-old full-back Charbel Shamoon the first professional contract of his career, with the scholarship deal earned off the back of an impressive debut campaign in green and black.
Shamoon, an Iraq youth international, made five Isuzu UTE A-League appearances under John Aloisi last season; having started in the club’s academy in 2022, Shamoon is the eighth young player to emerge from Western’s youth setup to sign a senior deal this off-season alone, joining Abel Walatee, Khoder Kaddour, Luke Vickery, Luka Coveny, Dylan Leonard, Jordan Lauton and James York in making the jump to Western’s Isuzu UTE A-League squad.

“It’s my first professional contract, ever since you’re a young kid you dream of it,” said Shamoon after putting pen to paper on the scholarship deal. “For it to be with Western United is an honour because I came through the academy.
“The academy program has been huge. Every season I’ve developed and I’ve got something from all the coaches on the field and off the field.
“Come support us, whether you’re a local in Tarneit or you’re further away, you’ll get some of the best football played here. The best time to join Western United is now with the new home.”

Western United general manager of football Mal Impiombato says Shamoon’s progression to a scholarship contract is a continuation of the club’s encouraging push to promote young talent from within and let their academy prospects shine in the Isuzu UTE A-League.
“Charbel has been another product of all of the positive work in our academy space, developing his game over the past two years and earning opportunities with the first team last season,” Impiombato said.
“His commitment to learning and improving his football is exemplary, also complemented by his professionalism and work ethic. These attributes have seen Charbel develop supremely in our environment.
“We are delighted for Charbel and for all of our academy talents making the step up this season, and I look forward to seeing their continued development.”
