Canberra walk away with ‘heads held high’ after last-gasp City defeat

Heather Garriock had nothing but praise for her Canberra United side after it took a 94th-minute penalty for Melbourne City to record their first win of Westfield W-League Season 2019/20.

Emily van Egmond held her nerve from the spot in stoppage time to wrap up a 2-1 win for the three-time Westfield W-League champions at McKellar Park.

The Green Machine had taken a shock lead when Katie Stengel followed up after Camilla’s strike cannoned back off the City crossbar on 59 minutes.

The visitors, who controlled 67% of possession and led the shot count 20 to 9, hit back through Milica Mijatović eight minutes later.

With the game dragging deep into injury time, Jessie Rasschaert was penalised for a foul on Yukari Kinga and Westfield Matilda van Egmond did the rest.

Ten of City’s starting 11 were senior internationals, with a collection of more than 600 caps, while Canberra’s three internationals – Camilla, captain Karly Roestbakken and Leena Khamis – share less than 50 caps between them.

“I’m so proud of the team,” head coach Garriock told canberraunited.com.au

“What we’ve built in the last six weeks, we’re disappointed to lose to a star studded lineup with Melbourne City.

“We’re walking away with a lot of positives and with our head held high.”

Canberra opened their 2019/20 season with a 2-0 win against Grand Finallists Perth Glory in Round 1, and lie fourth in the Westfield W-League after two rounds.
