Sydney FC striker Alex Brosque has confirmed he will not seek a release from the club to play overseas in a bid to enhance his World Cup prospects.
Brosque and team-mate Simon Colosimo are both outside hopes of making Pim Verbeek’s World Cup squad, their selection in the team to meet Kuwait in an Asian Cup qualifier on January 6 a possible pointer to the future.
Verbeek has made it clear he wants players playing up to World Cup selection in May, leaving A-League players in a quandary as the domestic season finishes in March.
But Brosque is comfortable taking his chances in the A-League and will not pursue an escape route when the January transfer window opens.
“I will have a word to him when we’re in camp but Pim’s pretty flexible and I’m sure he will be okay with me not going overseas,” Brosque told Sportal on Thursday.
“There’s no point leaving a club that’s going well to join an overseas club where you might be sitting on the bench.”
“That’s going to do more damage to your World Cup chances than if you didn’t go.”
“I think it’s going to be more beneficial staying here and going through until March and then trying to pick up something after that.”
“The club has said it will help us out so I’m comfortable leaving it in their hands.”
Brosque is yet to speak to Colosimo about the situation but is confident the stylish defender feels the same way.
“We can all sense something special happening at Sydney and want to be part of it,” he said.
“I wouldn’t feel right about walking out on the club after coming this far.”
“It wouldn’t be the right thing to do and I don’t think it’s necessary anyway.”
Brosque scored his sixth goal of the season in propelling the Sky Blues to a 1-0 victory over Central Coast on Wednesday night.
Sydney, equal top of the table with Melbourne, host Adelaide United at the SFS on Sunday night.
