Brisbane Roar announce raft of departures as Matildas star heads overseas

Brisbane Roar have announced the departures of seven first team players following the conclusion of the 2024-25 Ninja A-League season.

Two of the bigger names to depart the club, Singaporean international Danelle Tan leaves having failed to find the back of the net in her three matches during the season whilst six-time Bulgarian Women’s Footballer of the Year Evdokia Popadinova also departs having scored just three goals in 18 games.

Also leaving the Roar will be Young Matildas forward Tanaye Morris, midfielder Tamar Levin and goalkeeper Anneka Lewerenz as their contracts come to an end.

Furthermore, the club has also confirmed that Brazilian-born attacker Mariel Hecher and 30-year-old goalkeeper Keeley Richards have both retired following the end of another Ninja A-League season.

Meanwhile Matildas winger Sharn Freier will also now head off overseas as she prepares to join Frauen-Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg in what is a club-record deal for the Roar.

23-year-old Freier caught the eye of the German giants earlier this year following an impressive 18-months in the Ninja A-League that also saw her capped for the national team, with a deal agreed between both clubs back in January.

Unfortunately for both player and club, Freier then suffered a season-ending ankle injury in March which no doubt affected her side as they went on to miss out on a spot in this year’s Finals Series.
