The Central Coast Mariners will be banking on a big performance from superstar goalkeeper Mark Bosnich when they battle for a first win of the season on Sunday.
Bosnich has been named to make his Hyundai A-League debut against Queensland in a Round 3 showdown at Suncorp Stadium.
The former Australian and Manchester United star comes in for the suspended Danny Vukovic. He is expected to start in goals until Vukovic is eligible to return in Round 8.
Bosnich, who has not played a top-flight domestic football match in Australia since December 1991 when he turned out for Sydney United in the old NSL, said he was ‘very excited’ about his return to the big time.
He starred in a Pre-Season Cup win against Sydney and also got some game time in a win over Queensland.
He knows the stakes will be much higher on Sunday.
“I’m very much looking forward to the game, I’m ready,” Bosnich said.
“It’s a big game for us, we need a win and I’m confident we can get one.”
Bosnich has worked hard at training and coach Lawrie McKinna is confident the veteran will do the job.
“He’s been around a long time and knows what to expect,” McKinna said.
“Mark has done everything asked of him at training and deserves this chance.”
It is only early in the season but McKinna admits Sunday’s match is crucial for his side.
A final decision on whether Socceroo Mile Jedinak plays is expected to be made on Friday.
The midfielder has not played for six weeks after battling a groin injury. He has trained strongly this week and McKinna is hopeful Jedinak will play, possibly off the bench.
