MATCH REPORT: Five-goal thriller! Sky Blues edge Perth in the wet after lightning strikes cause two-hour delay

Sydney FC outlasted a resilient Perth Glory in a 3-2 win at Allianz Stadium, which featured a two-hour delay at half-time due to repeat lightning strikes.

The Sky Blues held a two-goal lead at half-time through Joe Lolley and Robert Mak, before the delays which, at one point, looked capable of halting the game altogether after the first half.

But play did resume at 10.30pm AEDT, nearly three hours after kick-off.

Adam Taggart struck back for Perth after the restart to halve the deficit. Then came late drama as Mitchell Glasson put Sydney two goals ahead with the help of a heavy deflection off Aleksandar Šuśnjar, only for Oliver Bozanic to strike with a superb late free-kick to give Glory hope at 3-2.

The game finally drew to a close after a frantic finish with Sydney holding their slender lead to the final whistle.

MATCH REPORT: League leaders! Phoenix go top as VAR reverses offside call on late Wellington winner over Western

Wellington Phoenix will end Round 6 on top of the Isuzu UTE A-League table after Ben Old’s late winner in a 1-0 triumph over Western United at Mars Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Old’s 80th-minute strike broke the deadlock in Ballarat – but the goal was initially flagged as offside before the decision reversal from Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Kris Griffiths-Jones, who adjudged Old as onside upon receiving a ball from Kosta Barbarouses in the box to score.

The 1-0 win ensured the Phoenix remained unbeaten through six games to start the season, with Giancarlo Italiano’s side moving into top spot, while Western slumped to a fifth loss on the bounce to remain planted to the foot of the table.
