Sydney FC striker reveals secret tactic as Sky Blues team-mate shines again

Patryk Klimala has praised the impact of attacker Adrian Segecic after the 20-year-old delivered off the bench once again to fire Sydney FC to a thrilling 3-2 Isuzu UTE A-League win over Adelaide United.

The Sky Blues twice led at Coopers Stadium through Klimala as he moved on to 10 goals for the season only to be pegged back by the home side thanks to two goals from new Golden Boot leader Archie Goodwin.

However, the away side snatched an incredible late winner in South Australia thanks to Segecic’s 94th-minute winner – a goal which moves them into the top six at the expense of their hosts.

“I think I (could) have scored more than a hat-trick and I had it in my mind after the game,” laughed Klimala when speaking to Paramount+ at full-time.

“But we have our super sub and he helped me a little bit because I would feel guilty after the game (if) the game finished 2-2.

“But it is what it is,” added the Polish striker when discussing his individual performance. “I’m happy to score two goals and going to Singapore in a good mood.”

Now sat on 10 goals for the season, Klimala capitalised on two errors by young Adelaide keeper Max Vartuli who was making his Isuzu UTE A-League debut.

“I watched this goalkeeper,” revealed Klimala when asked about the goalkeeping errors made by Adelaide’s shot-stopper.

“I didn’t know much about him, but I know like every shot, he obviously put in front of him, he’s not sure when he’s going outside the box, and I just try use it.

“Today I was in the right spot, in the right moment, and I did it. And I’m very happy that I could help the team to win the game.”

Asked specifically how he was able to study Vartuli given the keeper was making his debut, Klimala credited the club’s goalkeeping coach for providing the key data.

“Yes, I looked at him before the game with goalkeeping coach. He showed me a couple of clips from, I think, a youth game.

“And, yeah, I tried to use what I saw.”

Now sat inside the top six with four games left to play, the Sky Blues turn their attention to the first leg of their ACL Two semi-final clash against Singaporean side Lion City Sailors on Wednesday night.
