Newcastle Jets have bolstered their defence ahead of the 2026/27 Isuzu UTE A-League season, signing experienced centre-back Alex Grant on a one-year deal following his departure from Sydney FC.
The 32-year-old arrives in Newcastle after making 31 appearances across all competitions for the Sky Blues, where he played a key role in the club’s run to the AFC Champions League Two semi-finals.
Prior to joining Sydney, Grant enjoyed spells with Perth Glory, Chinese Super League side Tianjin Jinmen Tiger and Korean outfit Pohang Steelers.

Newcastle Jets Head Coach Mark Milligan believes Grant’s experience and leadership will strengthen his squad.
“Alex brings balance and experience to the back line. He is no stranger to success and we look forward to what he brings to the squad.”
Grant said he was eager to begin the next chapter of his career in Newcastle.
“I’m delighted to be joining the Jets. The chance to come up here and join this squad is something I’m relishing.
“To compete for the A-League and play in the Asian Champions League will be an exciting time for the Club and I can’t wait to get started and meet the fans.”
Grant joins the Jets after leaving Sydney FC earlier this month by mutual agreement, ending an 18-month spell in which he featured 26 times in the Isuzu UTE A-League alongside appearances in the AFC Champions League Two and Australia Cup.
Grant becomes the Jets’ sixth signing of the off-season following the arrivals of the likes of former Melbourne Victory striker Nikos Vergos and ex Melbourne City man Zane Schreiber.
Furthermore, Grant is the third former Sydney FC man to have made the move north to Newcastle, joining old teammates Patrick Wood and Joe Lolley.
