MATCHDAY AGENDA

7:45pm (AEDT): Brisbane Roar v Wellington PhoenixSuncorp Stadium

The big news out of Brisbane ahead of this game is Roar head coach Ben Cahn has taken an indefinite period of medical leave to address a health issue, meaning assistant Ruben Zadkovich has stepped into the role of acting head coach.

Cahn had overseen five matches since taking charge of the Roar, achieving one win and four losses, two of which came at Suncorp Stadium.

A big positive though is that the club this week announced the signing of former Jonny Warren Medallist Marco Rojas and he will be available for tonight’s clash having trained with the squad all week.

As for Wellington, a 2-1 away win over Newcastle in Round 14 moved them two points clear at the top as star-striker Oskar Zawada came back from injury with a bang.

The Polish striker took his tally to five goals for the campaign and his return to fitness will no doubt be a concern for Brisbane given he scored a hat-trick against them when the two sides met earlier in the season.

Perth Glory will be aiming to move further clear of bottom side Western United by securing three points against Melbourne City as Friday Night Football returns to HBF Park.

Boosted by the signing of former academy graduate Josh Rawlins, who has returned to club on-loan from Dutch side FC Utrecht for the remainder of the campaign, Alen Stajcic will also be hoping to call upon top goalscorer and club captain Adam Taggart – although a decision over his fitness will be made at the very last moment.

DAVID WILLIAMS: Aussie journeyman’s perfect answer to critics after two World Cups, Ange advice & Liverpool offer

As for Melbourne City, Aurelio Vidmar has been handed a huge boost this week with news Socceroos forward Mathew Leckie is fit and available for the trip to Perth after recovering from a hamstring tear.

In more good news, Vidmar will also now be able to call upon the services of 15-time Socceroo Jimmy Jeggo, who joined the club earlier this week on a deal until the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

After suffering consecutive losses in Rounds 12 and 13, Aurelio Vidmar’s side bounced back to winning ways in Round 14, seeing off Adelaide United 1-0 at AAMI Park.
