Wellington Phoenix have released Mo Al-Taay from the remainder of his Isuzu UTE A-League contract due to family reasons.
The Phoenix farewell the Iraq international midfielder, who will return home to his family in Sydney.
Al-Taay made 38 appearances for Wellington after arriving at Sky Stadium in July 2023.

“I am grateful for my time at the Nix and the season we had last year,” said the 24-year-old, who made nine appearances this season, starting once.
“I would like to thank the fans for their support throughout my time at the club.
“I wish everyone at the club all the best for the future.”

Al-Taay was influential in Wellington’s historic 2023-24 A-Leagues season.
He started 17 matches as the Phoenix narrowly missed out on a maiden Premiership and the Grand Final following a heart-breaking Semi-Final loss to Melbourne Victory.

“Mo was a key member of the men’s midfield last season and came agonisingly close to helping the Nix secure their first major trophy,” said director of football Shaun Gill.
“We’re sad to see him go, but family comes first.
“We wish Mo all the very best for his footballing future and hope he’s part of just the second Iraq team to play at a FIFA World Cup.”
