Melbourne Victory 4-0 Western Sydney Wanderers – Home of the Matildas (Liberty A-League)

MATCH REPORT: Matildas forward makes ‘statement’ with memorable double, including jaw-dropping goal

Tony Gustavsson, are you watching? Matildas forward Emily Gielnik put on a show with a brace as she reached a Liberty A-League milestone in Melbourne Victory’s 4-0 rout of Western Sydney Wanderers.

Gielnik made a “statement” with her two-goal performance, which included an outrageous goal from the centre circle to reach 50 Liberty A-League goals and lead Victory past Western Sydney at the Home of the Matildas on Friday night.

Mckenzie Weinert also scored twice but it was Gielnik, who stole the show with her performance as she moved equal fourth on the competition’s all-time goalscorers list while Victory leapfrogged the Wanderers into fourth.

Gielnik, who has not played for the Matildas since October 2022 due to fitness issues, has now scored three goals in two games.

Western United 2-0 Newcastle Jets – AAMI Park (Isuzu UTE A-League)

MATCH REPORT: ‘Pure class’ moment & a ‘brick wall’ lead Western United to drought-ending win

Western United won an Isuzu UTE A-League match for the first time since December courtesy of Friday night’s 2-0 victory against Newcastle Jets.

Bottom of the standings, Western took a seven-game winless run into the contest AAMI Park but that drought ended in Round 17 with just their third triumph of the season.

Daniel Penha’s moment of “pure class” – a ‘panenka’ penalty in the 16th minute, set the tone before Noah Botic sealed the points 10 minutes into the second half as Western won for the first time since December 15.

Western’s win and first clean sheet of the campaign, though, was soured by a late red card to James Donachie – who saw red for a dangerous challenge on Brandon O’Neill which was upgraded following a VAR review.

The 10th-placed Jets were not without chances, but the visitors were made to rue missed opportunities on the road.
