Gorry returns to Roar for ‘very important season’ ahead of 2023 World Cup

Matildas midfielder Katrina Gorry has returned for her 11th season at Brisbane Roar – and is eager to use the 2022-23 Liberty A-League campaign to launch toward next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Gorry will make the journey back to Queensland at the conclusion of the Swedish Damallsvenskan season with Vittsjö GIK.

The 30-year-old played for the Roar in the 2021-22 A-League Women campaign, building back into full fitness after the birth of her first child, daughter Harper, in August 2021.

Now, after amassing more than 100 appearances for Brisbane and winning two Premierships in 10 seasons, Gorry is back for campaign 11 in orange, with the goal of reaching the 2023 World Cup as part of the Matildas squad the key reason behind the return.

“I really enjoyed my season with Brisbane last year and for me Brisbane is home,” Gorry said. “To be playing in front of my family and friends for the club I’ve played for 10 years makes me so proud and honoured to be a part of this coming season.”

Gorry added: “This season is definitely the most important one, leading into a World Cup at home it’s about showcasing our league and Australia as a whole to the rest of the world and also to our fans and supporters across the country.

“It’s definitely a very important season and I’m so glad I can be a part of it.”

Gorry, on Thursday, was included in Matildas head coach Tony Gustavsson’s 23-player squad set to take on Canada in two friendly fixtures in September.

Brisbane’s current squad for the upcoming ALW season stands at eight, with Gorry, Holly McQueen, Mariel Hecher, Sharn Freier, Larissa Crummer, Shea Connors, Hollie Palmer and Ayesha Norrie all on board for the 2022-23 campaign.
