Member Spotlight: Australian football grows when people invest in it

For Melbourne Victory fan Lucas Pavlidis, a membership held since the club’s first A-Leagues season is the thread running through childhood memories, family tradition and a career built around the game he loves.

Lucas traces his obsession back to childhood trips to Olympic Park with his father – part of a ritual that shaped how he sees football to this day.

“Dad and I would go to games at Olympic Park together in the early seasons of the league, making it a tradition to get a bite in the surrounding neighbourhoods before going to the game,” he recalls.

The timing couldn’t have been better: the arrivals of Archie Thompson and Kevin Muscat turned Victory into something unmistakably local and the fanbase was beginning to galvanise.

For a football obsessed kid of Greek heritage, Lucas’ love of the game went to a new level after watching Greece stun the world by winning UEFA EURO2004.

“As an impressionable kid who was playing football at my local club, and with Greek ancestry, I revelled in the afterglow of an historic EURO 2004 win.

“When the Socceroos qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup on the same day as my 12th birthday, I was beyond hooked.”

Membership, for Lucas, has never just been a transaction:

“Being a member means being a part of a community of supporters dedicated to their club.

“In the last 22 years I’ve been fortunate enough to see us win and lose finals, go on countless away trips and relive my childhood dream of supporting a local club that represented the best city in the world, Melbourne.

“I’ve turned strangers into friends on the terraces, strengthened lifelong bonds through hours spent on Swan St.”

One memory stands above the rest: Victory’s 5-0 rout of Sydney FC in 2005, when over 18,000 fans packed Olympic Park under a “sold out” sign hoisted on a hired cherry picker.

“Life was simple, so was the football,” he says of that era, when there was no sponsor on the kit and an athletics track still ringed the pitch, and a stadium that shook every time Victory scored.

That childhood love didn’t just shape his weekends, it actually shaped his career.

“If I hadn’t fallen in love with Melbourne Victory as a kid, I don’t think I would have pursued a career in football media,” Lucas reflects, with a passion that carried him from the terraces into a profession built around the game.

His message to the next generation of fans is simple and direct:

“Football is better shared. Support your club. Turn up, sing, bring your family and friends and be part of something bigger than yourself.

“Australian football grows when people invest in it. You can make a massive difference to what the future of our game looks like.
