Sydney FC midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler has completed a transfer to German Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln, netting the Sky Blues a seven-figure fee in the process.
The 21-year-old Socceroo departs in one of Sydney FC’s most significant outgoing transfers in recent years after an extraordinary rise over the past 12 months.
Okon-Engstler made his professional debut for the Sky Blues in the Australia Cup before establishing himself as one of the Isuzu UTE A-League’s brightest young talents, going on to feature 30 time for the club as they reached the Grand Final.

His rapid development in the Isuzu UTE A-League saw him not only make his Socceroos debut against Venezuela in 2025, but then go on to play in all four matches for the Socceroos at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“Sydney FC has been incredible for my development over the past year and I can’t thank everyone enough for the belief they’ve shown in me,” Okon-Engstler said.
“The coaches, my teammates and all of the staff have helped me grow so much as both a player and a person.
“I’ll always be grateful for the opportunity they gave me to begin my professional career.
“It’s always been a dream to play in one of the top five leagues in the world and I’m really excited for this next challenge. I’ll always look back fondly on my time in Sky Blue and wish everyone at the Club every success.”

The midfielder helped Sydney FC reach the Isuzu UTE A-League Grand Final, won the club’s Player of the Year award and was named in the PFA Team of the Season before his performances at the World Cup ultimately caught the eye of the Bundesliga side.
Sydney FC head coach Patrick Kisnorbo praised the midfielder’s impact during his lone professional season at the club.
