Wellington Phoenix: 12th

Round 19 result
Adelaide United: 1-1 draw against Melbourne Victory (A)
Wellington Phoenix: 1-0 loss to Sydney FC (H)

Adelaide return to Coopers Stadium keen to jump into the top three with a win over the struggling Wellington Phoenix.

The Reds were unlucky to only come away from Melbourne with a point last weekend, scoring through Yaya Dukuly, weathering the storm from Victory’s wingers then having Luka Jovanović strike the post with the goal gaping.

Wellington played their best match in a while against Sydney, and still lost it 1-0. They thought they had a penalty in the first half when Rhyan Grant was judged to have fouled Kazuki Nagasawa, however it was overturned on VAR review.

When these sides met on January 11 it was Ryan White and Luke Duzel who scored for Adelaide in the first half before Wellington fought back with goals from Isaac Hughes and Corbyn Piper to make it 2-2.

Newcastle Jets v Western Sydney Wanderers

Saturday, March 7 – McDonald Jones Stadium – 5:00pm AEDT

Current table position
Newcastle Jets:
1st
Western Sydney Wanderers:
11th

Round 19 result
Newcastle Jets:
0-0 draw against Central Coast Mariners (A)
Western Sydney Wanderers:
4-0 win over Macarthur FC (A)

Newcastle’s winning streak came to an end last week with Central Coast holding them to their first draw of the season. This is a disappointment for a side chasing down the Wanderers’ record of 10 consecutive wins, however going nine games unbeaten is still a Jets record.

Mark Milligan’s side did have the ball in the back of the net through Eli Adams, though that was overturned for Will Dobson being offside in the build up.

A big win away to Macarthur after a pair of draws and now Western Sydney have themselves a semi-realistic finals charge happening. They still sit second last, but they are a win away from eighth and five points outside the top six.

They soundly beat Macarthur with their third clean sheet from nine matches this year thanks to goals from Steven Ugarković, Bozhidar Kraev, Ryan Fraser and Brandon Borrello.

Newcastle defeated the Wanderers when they met in January, Joe Shaughnessy and Adams scored for the Jets before Awan Lual grabbed a late consolation goal.

Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory

Saturday, March 7 – Allianz Stadium – 7:35pm AEDT

Current table position
Sydney FC:
3rd
Melbourne Victory:
5th

Round 19 result
Sydney FC:
1-0 win over Wellington Phoenix (A)
Melbourne Victory:
1-1 draw against Adelaide United (H)

The first Big Blue of the season was a comfortable 3-0 win to Sydney and the second was a comfortable 4-0 win to Melbourne, making this final encounter hard to predict.

Sydney are undefeated in their last three matches and the Victory are undefeated in their last four, though neither have been able to string too many wins together.

Sydney’s attackers struggled against Wellington, but their defenders played very well with a clean sheet and their one goal came through centre-back Alexandar Popović.

The big hit for the Sky Blues is the injury to star winger Joe Lolley, the Englishman twisted his ankle in a challenge and will be out for up to six weeks.

Victory were disappointed to come away from their Adelaide clash with only a point having dominated large parts of the game.

One thing became very clear in the second half; they have a glut of forwards that are capable of getting on the end of opportunities, but there are way fewer opportunities for them when there is no Juan Mata or Denis Genreau on the pitch.

Auckland FC v Perth Glory

Sunday, March 8 – Go Media Stadium – 1:00pm AEDT

Current table position
Auckland FC:
2nd
Perth Glory:
10th

Round 19 result
Auckland FC:
3-0 win over Melbourne City (H)
Perth Glory:
1-1 draw against Brisbane Roar (A)

Jesse Randall is the most in form player in the Isuzu UTE A-League right now. The Kiwi winger added a goal and an assist to his tally against Melbourne City, taking him to nine goals and the lead of the golden boot race, and five assists.

Auckland captain Hirokai Sakai had to be substituted with a hamstring injury in the first half against City, forcing them to change from five at-the-back to a four at-the-back with strikers Guillermo May and Sam Cosgrove up top together.

This formation change gave manager Steve Corica something to ponder ahead of this weekend, they scored all three of their goals and didn’t really look like conceding after the switch.

Perth Glory were missing Tom Lawrence in a stagnant 1-1 draw away to Brisbane, both sides scored early and then struggled as they got more and more desperate in search of a winner.

Auckland haven’t lost since the last time they played Perth four rounds ago, this was also Perth’s last win; a late Jaiden Kucharski double taking them past Randall’s opener.
