Round 15 result
Wellington Phoenix: 2-2 draw against Melbourne City (H)
Melbourne Victory: 1-0 loss to Central Coast Mariners (A)

Wellington blew a 2-0 lead and missed a 90th minute penalty at home to Melbourne City last week, while Melbourne Victory couldn’t make the most of a man advantage away to Central Coast.

Ifeanyi Eze scored a goal in each half for Wellington to keep his scoring form going, taking his total goals to seven for the season and giving the Nigerian an equal share of the Golden Boot.

Alby Kelly-Heald made his return in goal and the 20-year-old made two important saves in the second half to earn his side the point.

Melbourne Victory had plenty of the ball, but strikers Nikos Vergos and Charles Nduka struggled to make an impact, spurning their chances as the Arthur Diles’ side succumbed to a frustrating 1-0 loss in Gosford.

This match is an opportunity for Vergos to bounce back into form, last time the Victory played the Phoenix, the Greek striker scored a hat-trick in a 5-1 win.

Macarthur FC v Perth Glory

Current table position
Macarthur FC: 4th
Perth Glory: 9th

Round 15 result
Macarthur FC: 1-1 draw against Adelaide United (A)
Perth Glory: 2-1 win over Auckland FC (H)

Chris Ikonomidis’ first goal for the season earned Macarthur a point away from home, while Perth Glory claimed the huge scalp of Auckland FC with two second half goals from substitute Jaiden Kucharski.

Perth centre backs Scott Wootton and Brian Kaltak were strong in the air against Auckland, making a combined 10 headed clearances and winning 11 from 18 headed duals en route to victory.

Macarthur are now just three points off the top of the table, meaning a win here brings them straight into the Premiership fight. A win for Perth Glory will get them back into the top six.

Perth took the points when these sides met in November, goals from Nicholas Pennington and Charbel Shamoon sealed the 2-0 win.

However the Glory will be without midfielder Rhys Bozinovski after he sealed a Deadline Day move to Dutch Eredivisie side Heracles Almelo.

Auckland FC v Sydney FC

Sydney FC: 2nd

Round 15 result
Auckland FC: 2-1 loss to Perth Glory (A)
Sydney FC: 4-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers (H)

Jesse Randall opened the scoring for Auckland but they couldn’t hang on against a late Perth surge, dropping crucial points thanks to Kucharski’s brilliant double.

Sydney bounced back from their disappointing Big Blue performance with a dominant display in their 4-1 Sydney Derby win.

Auckland FC manager Steve Corica made the decision to take Michael Woud out of goal against Perth, putting Oli Sail in for his first start of the season. Unfortunately, Sail was forced off with a serious injury at the 69 minute mark. With no Sail, Woud looks set to return to the starting lineup.

Sydney’s young fleet was impressive in their win, 19-year-old attacking midfielder Tiago Quintal scored his first two Isuzu UTE A-League goals and 16-year-old winger Akol Akon chipped in with three assists in his first start for the Sky Blues.

The last time these sides met was in the quarter-final of the Australia Cup back in August. Lachlan Brook and Joe Lolley both scored to send the match to extra time and then penalties, where Auckland took the win.

Central Coast Mariners: 1-0 win over Melbourne Victory (H)

Brisbane Roar endured a tough afternoon against Newcastle in their 4-1 loss, facing 18 shots, seven shots on target and being held to just 37% possession. Their one goal – and really only bright spot on the afternoon – came from Dimitri Valkanis.

Central Coast went down to 10 men when Nathan Paull was shown a straight red card against Victory for denying a clear goal scoring opportunity. That didn’t stop them from holding on to their 1-0 lead though, with goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne making nine saves as the Mariners climbed off the foot of the ladder.

As well as Central Coast missing Nathan Paull, the Roar will be without striker Chris Long after the the Englishman was given his second yellow card at the end of the match against Newcastle.

Brisbane took a 2-1 victory when these sides met on New Year’s Eve. Michael Ruhs and Lucas Mauragis had the score at 1-1, before a goal in stoppage time from Justin Vidić gave Brisbane the win.

Round 15 result
Western Sydney Wanderers: 4-1 loss to Sydney FC (A)
Melbourne City: 2-2 draw against Wellington Phoenix (A)

Ryan Fraser got the Sydney Derby off to a cracking start for Western Sydney with a first minute goal, but it was all downhill from there as they were torn apart at the back repeatedly by a rampant Sydney FC.

Central defender Anthony Pantazopoulos had been having an excellent season before the Derby and the Wanderers will need the 22-year-old to bounce back against City’s fleet of incisive wingers.

Melbourne City escaped from Wellington with a point, coming back from 2-0 down with two goals in quick succession from young wingers Marcus Younis and Medin Memeti.

Younis has been the pick of City’s January loanees so far. With Ryan Teague still getting up to speed and Daniel Arzani yet to reach match fitness. The 20-year-old winger has two goals and two more chances created from his two substitute appearances.

4-1 win over Brisbane Roar (H)

Mark Milligan’s box office Jets went to the top of the table with their 4-1 dismantling of Brisbane, while Adelaide earned an important point against Macarthur to keep them in the top six.

It was a good day to be called Lachlan in Newcastle, with Lachlan Rose scoring and assisting a goal and Lachlan Bayliss scoring two. Clayton Taylor was the other man to grab a goal, ensuring Newcastle have now won their last five matches, scoring 14 goals and conceding just four.

Adelaide’s philosophy of promoting local talent was on full display against Macarthur, with Dutch goalkeeper Joshua Smits the only player from the starting 11 not originating from South Australia.

Johnny Yull has been in top form for the Reds, with two assists and one goal in their last three matches.

A win for Newcastle will extend their lead atop the table, while a win for Adelaide can get them as high as second with other results falling their way.
