This is the ‘long-term’ future for an Aussie gun as Socceroos question emerges

Midfield. That is the future for Melbourne City star Kai Trewin at club and international level, according to head coach Aurelio Vidmar.

Trewin has been called up by the CommBank Socceroos previously but the Isuzu UTE A-League champion is yet to make his international debut for Australia.

The talented 24-year-old was drafted in by Tony Popovic as a defender in a previous Socceroos squad but Trewin has since returned to midfield at club level, with Samuel Souprayen back to fitness alongside German Ferreyra at the heart of City’s defence.

Following an injury picked up by Souprayen in Tuesday night’s AFC Champions League Elite win over Thai giants Buriram United, Vidmar was asked if Trewin could potentially drop back into defence to fill a void.

“I think Kai’s developing more and more as a six, and we know that at any stage he can drop back in there (defence),” Vidmar told reporters.

Pressed further on what that might mean for his Socceroos ambitions, Vidmar replied: “I don’t know what Popa thinks in that area, but I know long term, Kai is going to be more valuable as a six.

“Knowing that he also can play as a centre-back to have that skill set is such a positive thing for him.

“If that means that he misses out on a national-team selection because of that, as difficult as it might be for him, I think long term is more positive for his future.”
