‘Remarkable’ Ninja A-League star’s performance steals the show as Australia eye 17-year first

Leticia McKenna’s star continues to shine bright and as a result, Australia’s Under-23 team have the chance to win the ASEAN Women’s Championship MSIG Serenity Cup for the first time in 17 years.

Melbourne City gun McKenna put on a show in front of a packed crowd in Vietnam, where the two-time Ninja A-League Premiership winner scored a goal and setup another in Australia’s 2-1 victory over the host nation.

McKenna headed into the ASEAN tournament having signed a new two-year deal with City. The 23-year-old played a key role in the club’s invincible season as Michael Matricciani’s went unbeaten throughout the regular campaign thanks to her six goals and five assists. She also inspired the team’s run to the inaugural AFC Women’s Champions League final.

The “remarkable” midfielder set the tone in the semi-final showdown against Vietnam – a fixture boasting an array of A-Leagues talents, teeing up Canberra United’s Aideen Keane with a cross into the box in the sixth minute.

McKenna went from provider to goalscorer 11 minutes later thanks to her long-range strike after Brisbane Roar’s Chloe Lincoln had triggered a swift counter-attack courtesy of her save at the other end.

Vietnam reduced the deficit with two minutes of regulation remaining but Australia – eyeing their first ASEAN Women’s Championship crown since 2008 – were not to be denied as they earned a rematch with Myanmar in the final on Tuesday.
