Melbourne City seal transfer coup as Celtic defender with ‘significant potential’ arrives

Melbourne City have added an exciting young talent to their ranks, signing central defender Liam Bonetig on a three-year deal from Scottish giants Celtic.

In what is a statement of intent from City, Bonetig has put pen-to-paper on a deal with the reigning Champions until the end of the Isuzu UTE A-League 2027-28 season.

A product of the Western Sydney Wanderers academy, the 20-year-old returns to Australia after leaving Celtic where he featured prominently for their reserve sides as well as playing in the UEFA Youth League.

“It’s a really exciting moment for me to return to Australia and to be able to join the reigning
Champions makes it even more special,” said Bonetig.

“I’ve learned a lot over in Scotland over the past two years and I’m hungry to keep improving. There’s no better environment to do that in Australia than at City.

“I can’t wait to get started and do everything I can to help the team have another big season and win more trophies for the City fans.”

A regular with the Young Socceroos and younger brother of Wanderers defender Alex, Bonetig will not only add quality to the Champions but the 20-year-old will also bring much needed depth to a City side preparing to juggle both Isuzu UTE A-League and AFC Champions League Elite commitments in 2025-26.

“Liam’s attributes align well with our playing philosophy, and we believe he’ll grow into a valuable contributor to the squad over the coming seasons.”
