Newcastle Jets star on her love of football, playing in the Westfield W-League and her club community role

Cassidy Davis IS football. She plays for Newcastle Jets in the Westfield W-League and coaches two local sides at Warners Bay. What’s more, she works as a community officer across the Hunter region for the Hyundai A-League club.

She even fits in her study around her busy schedule. How does she do it?

Ahead of the PlayFootball Round, we asked the 23-year-old Jets dynamo about the game she loves.

Cassidy Davis on football, in her own words

I actually played netball up until I was 12 and then my dad was always involved in football and so since then, I’ve loved it.

I just wanted to be playing and coaching. I just love it.  I’m also studying to be a primary school teacher. But life is pretty much football!

I play for the Jets, I work for the club in a community role and coach two teams at Warners Bay where I’m a player-coach in the off-season and I coach an U17s team there.

I’m a midfielder, but I play in defence for the Jets in the W-League. We recently played against Sam Kerr and we kept her out for 70 minutes. And then she got a hat trick very quickly, in around 10 minutes.

Seeing her do her backflip celebration was pretty cool, but obviously, we wanted to beat them.

There was a lot of adrenaline in that game.

I haven’t scored any goals yet myself in the W-League, but I came close recently.

Hannah Brewer and I did a promo for the Jets at Christmas and we had our goal celebration, but no goals for me in the W-League as yet.

When the Matildas came here it was great when they faced Brazil. It’s important for the Newcastle community to see the best players in Australia and we have such a great stadium.

Since Lawrie McKinna, the Jets CEO, got me involved in community development, I’ve been heaps more involved.

Playing here and working here is a good connection with the community. And the feedback has been good from the people when they see the A-League and W-League teams together, as well as the youth team getting out and about in the community.

We’re all one club now and there’s been a lot of positive feedback about that. It’s really good seeing Newcastle moving forward.

Playing for my local club is very important to me. I’d like to stay here and hopefully finish my career here.

And I think it’s really good that they have themed rounds like Play Football. If you want to play, then do it.

And it’s always fun to have a kick around with your friends.
