KERR STRIKES AS GLORY EDGE WANDERERS
Sam Kerr scored the only goal as Perth Glory moved to the top of the Westfield W-League with a 1-0 win at Western Sydney Wanderers on Friday.
Kerr capped a stunning individual week – one in which she was named AFC Women’s Player of the Year on Wednesday night – by notching the winner shortly after half-time in western Sydney.
The Westfield Matildas star raced onto Rachel Hill’s through ball and rounded goalkeeper Jada Mathyssen-Whyman before applying the finish.
SYDNEY FC BACK ON TRACK
Sydney FC moved off the bottom and ahead of rivals Melbourne Victory with a 2-0 win in an entertaining Big Blue at Cromer Park on Saturday.
Played in consistent rain, the home side took an early lead through Princess Ibini before Lisa De Vanna doubled the advantage after half-time to sew up three points for the second successive match.
Sydney’s win moved them to sixth while Victory sit equal bottom after six rounds.
ROAR CONTINUE TO IMPRESS
Brisbane Roar maintained a share of top spot and put space on Canberra United with a 1-0 win at McKellar Park on Sunday.
Tameka Butt scored the only goal with just over 20 minutes remaining to give her side a fourth win in five Westfield W-League matches.
Haley Kopmeyer had kept Canberra in the contest with a series of fine saves against her former side, but the goalkeeper’s efforts proved in vain with Butt’s winner moving Roar level on 12 points with leaders Perth Glory.
LATE DRAMAS AS CITY HELD BY REDS
Sarah Willacy saved an 89th minute penalty from Kyah Simon to help Adelaide United secure a dramatic 1-1 draw with Melbourne City at Lakeside Stadium on Sunday.
Willacy, who had brought down Jess Fishlock in the area, went from zero to hero for the Reds as she kept out Simon’s spot-kick to preserve a valuable point for the away side.
City earlier went ahead through Ashley Hatch’s 14th-minute header and held their advantage for an almost hour as they looked set to join Canberra United and Newcastle Jets on nine points.
