Phoenix secure Kiwi international

Wellington Phoenix young gun Louis Fenton has committed his future to the New Zealand club, signing a two-year contract extension on Wednesday.

Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick admitted he was delighted to retain theĀ 22-year-old until the end of the 2016/17 Hyundai A-League season.Ā

ā€œIt was an easy decision to offer him another contract because Louis is what I call a 100 per center, someone you always know will give you 100 per cent effort,ā€ Merrick said.

ā€œIf he isnā€™t having a great day technically he makes up for it with effort.

ā€œHe is an emerging young New Zealand player who has already represented his country at senior level and I believe he will be an All White long term.

ā€œThe way he is developing as a player and a person was shown when he captained a young Phoenix team to the finals of the Hong Kong Sevens a few weeks ago.”

Fenton said there was some interest from overseas clubs but nothing concrete and he was more than happy to continue at the Phoenix.

ā€œI still feel lucky that I get to play the game I love with a good bunch of boys,ā€ Fenton said.

ā€œI believe the shoulder injuries that were so frustrating are now behind me as I havenā€™t had any problems for nine months and they feel stronger than ever.ā€

Fenton is enjoying captaining the under-23 New Zealand team as they attempt to qualify for the Olympics.

ā€œItā€™s a pretty cool feeling captaining my country and Iā€™m very proud that Iā€™ve been given the opportunity,ā€ he said.

ā€œThere is extra responsibility which Iā€™m enjoying and learning from but I think it was about time I started to grow up and tried to be a leader.

ā€œPlaying in the Olympics would be a real dream and a chance to play against some great players, but we must first qualify.ā€
