Perth Glory confirms that Steve Pantelidis will be leaving the club to play for Malaysian Super League team Selangor FC.
Steve Pantelidis joined Perth Glory at the start of the 2011 Hyundai A-League season and has more than 140 Hyundai A-league appearances to his name, playing in five finals campaigns with three different clubs, and winning a championship with Melbourne Victory in 2006/07. Steve went on to establish himself as a key member of the Perth Glory team in the 2011 Hyundai A-League season, going on to start in 24 of 27 matches and fast becoming popular amongst his fellow team mates and Glory fans alike. His versatility and no-nonsense style of defending, established Steve as an integral member of the Perth Glory team that reached the 2012 Grand Final where they were controversially beaten by Brisbane Roar.
Perth Glory Head Coach Alistair Edwards had nothing but praise for the 30-year-old defender.
“Steve has been a great servant to Perth Glory over the past two years. We were in talks to extend his contract further, however we had also received significant interest from a number of clubs in Asia for him. There is increasing money going into football in Asia and the Malaysian League is fast attracting a number of overseas players. As a Club we do not want to stand in the way of player seeking to pursue overseas aspirations, and as such we-d like to thank Steve for his commitment and professionalism at Perth Glory. We wish him well in his future endeavours.”
Steve Pantelidis joins up with former Melbourne Victory coach Mehmet Durakovic who recently took the reins at Selangor FC. Durakovic had a highly-successful playing career with Selangor, winning the Malaysia Cup in three successive years between 1995 to 1997. The signing of Steve Pantelidis is his first major player signing since joining the Club.
